Significance of Masjid Nimrah

Significance of Masjid Nimrah

Masjid Nimrah, also known as Masjid al-Nimrah or Nimrah Mosque, is a significant religious site located in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This mosque holds immense importance for Muslims worldwide due to its historical and spiritual significance. Its association with the annual Hajj pilgrimage and the sermon delivered by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) make it a place of great reverence and historical interest. Located in the plains of Arafat at Wadi Uranah in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, Masjid Nimrah is a significant Islamic landmark.

Masjid Nimrah is closely linked to the events surrounding the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the year 632 CE, which took place just a few months before his passing. During this pilgrimage, after resting for a while, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) got up at midday, sat on his camel, and delivered the last and a historic sermon at Arafat, near Masjid Nimrah, to thousands of his companions.

Soon after Prophet Muhammad (SAW) finished addressing the Ummah, Allah sent a revelation that said, “Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you, and I have chosen Islam, as your religion.” [Quran 5:3]

In the second century of Islam, Masjid Nimrah was constructed at the exact location where Prophet Muhammad (SAW) delivered His final sermon and led the Salah. It is worth noting that a part of Masjid Nimrah, which is situated beyond the confines of Arafat, falls outside the designated boundaries of Arafat due to its proximity to Wadi Urana. Therefore, if a pilgrim stays there after midday, there’s a high chance that their Hajj becomes invalid. In simpler words, one must enter the plains of Arafat between sunset and midday in order to complete the rituals of Hajj.

The Farewell Sermon, also known as the Khutbah al-Wada, is one of the most profound speeches in Islamic history. In His sermon, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized fundamental principles of Islam, including the equality of all Muslims, the prohibition of bloodshed, and the sanctity of their wealth and honor. He also stressed the importance of maintaining family ties and treating women with kindness and respect.

This sermon has had a profound impact on Islamic ethics and has served as a guiding light for Muslims throughout history. Its messages of unity, justice, and compassion remain relevant and continue to inspire Muslims worldwide.

Each year, during the annual Hajj pilgrimage, millions of Muslims gather at Arafat, near Masjid Nimrah, to perform the rituals that are an integral part of the pilgrimage. Arafat is considered the most important day of Hajj, and it is here that pilgrims stand in prayer, seeking forgiveness, supplicating to Allah, and reflecting on their faith.

Masjid Nimrah stands as a testament to the historical and spiritual richness of Islam. Its association with the Farewell Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and its role in the annual Hajj pilgrimage makes it a place of great reverence for Muslims around the world.

For Muslims, visiting Masjid Nimrah during the Hajj pilgrimage is a deeply spiritual experience. It serves as a reminder of the core principles of Islam, as enunciated by the beloved Prophet (SAW) in His historic sermon. In a world often marked by division and discord, the message of unity, justice, and compassion delivered at Masjid Nimrah remains a timeless and vital source of guidance and inspiration to the mankind.
