Eid ul Adha

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated on the tenth day of the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Dhu-al-Hijjah. Hajj is a sacred duty of Muslims who can afford it and is one of the fundamental Five Pillars of Islam.

Eid-ul-Adha, a significant celebration in Islam, serves as a commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering devotion to Allah and his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail. In the ultimate moment of sacrifice, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram, which was offered as a substitute. This divine command served as a test of Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering obedience and steadfast commitment to fulfill his Lord’s directives without hesitation. Hence, Eid-ul-Adha signifies the festival of sacrifice.

The act of Qurbani, also called Udhiya, involves the ritualistic sacrifice of an animal as a symbol to honor Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice for the sake of Allah. This significant practice takes place over a period of three days, specifically from the 10th to the 12th of Dhu-al-Hijjah.

Sacrifice embodies the essence of personal growth and the creation of a harmonious society, encompassing noble qualities. In the perspective of Islam, equality prevails among individuals, differentiating only by their devotion to God, integrity and faith. This perspective highlights the profound significance of sacrifice.

To perform the Qurbani ritual, a sacrificial animal must be selected from the following permissible options: sheep, lamb, goat, bull or camel. It is essential that the animal is in good health and meets the required age criteria to ensure a “halal” slaughter method is followed. The meat is to be divided into three equal parts. One portion is donated to those in need, and the second is given to friends & family. The third portion is kept for one’s own consumption and typically forms part of the Eid feast enjoyed with family and friends.

People generously distribute meat among the less fortunate, allowing them to partake in the joy of consuming meat through the sacrifices made by others. This compassionate act ensures that economically less advantaged people are well looked after, promoting a sense of care and unity within the community.

Every command of Allah holds immense significance for us, encompassing profound wisdom within. The lessons embedded within these nourish our souls and strengthen our connection with the divine.
